As part of an annual winter initiative representatives from Edcon today presented the South African Red Cross with 5,000 blankets for distribution to families in the Buffalo City Municipality in East London.
Edcon recognizes that winter is especially tough for many members of our community so each year at this time we aim to help ease the winter burden by providing a donation of blankets as part of our commitment to social development, said Laverne Leibrandt, Edcon CSI Project Manager at the handover ceremony at the Billy Francis Hall in Gompo Park.
To ensure the blankets are distributed to families and individuals most in need Edcon has provided the blankets to the South African Red Cross who together with the councillors of Buffalo City Municipality and NGOs in the area have identified the most distressed families in 45 wards throughout the City.
We believe it is best to partner with organizations, like the Red Cross, who have on-the-ground experience and knowledge of the needs of the communities so that our contribution will deliver the maximum benefit, Leibrandt said.
Over the past three years Edcon has donated over 10 000 blankets to communities in South Africa who have various needs ranging from vulnerable children to families that were left stranded because of disasters that struck their areas.
The 5000 blankets donated today are valued at a total cost of over R375, 000.
South African Red Cross Eastern Cape Regional Manager Mandisa Ntlabati said, Edcon's donation will go a long way to making winter more comfortable for thousands of families in the Eastern Cape.
It is commendable that Edcon understands the value of working with organizations like the Red Cross to achieve the best possible outcome for the most vulnerable members of our communities.
